Tips for excursions

Schloss Mörlbach is very centrally located for all kinds of activities, be it sports, cultural or culinary experiences, winter or summer, indoor or outdoor.
Explore the nature of the Fünf-Seen-Land, go for a hike with the Darchinger family and their Isartal alpacas, visit Lake Starnberg 5 minutes away and rent a rowing boat or a small motorboat there, or drive directly to the Alps, barely 1 hour away. For children there is even a small ski lift in Berg.

There are plenty of churches and monasteries steeped in history in the near and far surrounding area: Schäftlarn Monastery with monastery store and inn is only 7 minutes away, the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, picturesque villages and lively towns with great art museums and a wide variety of concert and theater offerings. The most beautiful villages in only 3 km distance are Irschenhausen and Farchach.

Special events and exhibitions are held in the small, fine Hollerhaus in Irschenhausen, organized by the Stöckl family. (www.hollerhaus-irschenhausen.de)

Here is a tiny selection of possibilities:

We would especially like to recommend the new "Motorworld" in Munich-Fröttmaning, with unique historic automobiles and racing cars and very good gastronomy, in a former, wonderfully restored locomotive repair shop. Worth a family excursion!

In about half an hour by car you can reach four of the most beautiful golf courses far and wide: Feldafing (20 km), St. Eurach (30 km), Iffeldorf (30 km) and Hohenpähl
(40 km) - on the latter, a dreamlike view of an impressive alpine panorama awaits you.

On the western shore, near Possenhofen, stands the birthplace of Ludwig's no less famous cousin Elisabeth, called Sisi, later Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary.

The most beautiful and best places on the rivers Isar and Loisach

From south to north

ISAR

The river Isar rises in Tyrol (Austria) and flows into the Danube after 295 km near Deggendorf. It flows right through the Bavarian capital of Munich, where its banks are a popular meeting place: for barbecuing (only at certain fireplaces), swimming (even nude bathing is partly permitted in the open-air bathing areas), biking on well-maintained bike paths upstream or downstream, or simply taking an easy hike along its banks, from one bridge to the next. Popular with locals as well as tourists are the humid raft trips on the Isar, they start from the raft landing "Pupplinger Au" in Wolfratshausen and end after about 5-6 hours of travel in Munich.

ICKING (3 km)

Isar Weir Icking The 1.5km walk to the weir is well worth it. Along the upper Isar canal path, numerous flowering plants can be discovered, including native orchids. In summer, the surfers at the weir are a real show. Hidden behind the weir is the Ickinger Weiher with a nice swimming beach. It lies idyllically between the Isar and the Isar Canal. You can also cycle along the Isar Canal to the beautiful Schäftlarn Monastery. Upstream, after about 2 km, you come to the Isarspitz, where the Loisach and Isar rivers meet. Especially for children, the gravel banks in the nature reserve offer an ideal swimming spot with crystal clear water.

Aumühle If you walk along the Isar Canal you will come to the fish farm, in the middle of one of the largest Bavarian landscape conservation areas south of Munich. In the Aumühle, native fish have been bred for generations. An excursion paradise for the whole family, where nature is still in order. Endless hiking trails and romantic paths let you forget everyday life. From the Isar high bank then the white-blue view of the Alps

SCHÄFTLARN (7 km)

Bicycle tour From Schäftlarn, you can take a bicycle tour on the beautiful Isar bike paths all the way to Munich - the Hellabrunn Zoo, for example, is a good destination.

Schäftlarn Monastery and Klosterbräustüberl The latter is an inn with a beer garden and impressive dining rooms in ancient vaults. The food is good, our favorite on hot days is the Gurkenkaltschale. Across the street is a monastery store (entrance under the monastery gate) with books, wines and (religious) souvenirs.
(Monday to Sunday 10:00-22:00 | (0)8178 3694 | Klosterbräu Stüberl, Kloster Schäftlarn 16, 82067 Schäftlarn)

The Gasthaus zum Bruckenfischer is about 2 km away on the other side of the Isar. The sandbanks formed by the river here are a popular place for sunbathing and for bathers and parents with children.
(Monday to Wednesday & Friday to Sunday 10:00-22:00 | +49 (0) 8178 3635 | Dürnstein 1, 82544 Egling)

Gasthaus zur Mühle On weekends, the rafts from Wolfratshausen, with their partying people, dock here for a lunch break. Afterwards, the longest raft slide in Europe (345 m) next to the 100-year-old Isar power plant continues spectacularly and to loud cheers - the raft can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h in the process.
(Wednesday to Sunday 10:30-21:00 | +49 (0) 8178 3630 | Mühlthal 10, 82064 Straßlach-Dingharting)

(Monday to Sunday 11:30-23:30 | +49 (0) 089 7448840 | Am Klettergarten 7, 82065 Baierbrunn)

Mörlbach

Church of St. Stephen The building fabric of the small 510-year-old church next to Mörlbach Castle dates back to the early Gothic period and was renovated in 1978. (For more detailed information see 6.5) The church is known for its rich late Gothic furnishings. Inside it holds two valuable Gothic altars, which you would not expect to find in a simple village church. The church can be visited by appointment with the sacristan family Darchinger-Köhler (Lukashof): Information is available at the Catholic parish office Aufkirchen.
(Opening hours by appointment | +49 (0) 8151 9987980 | Lindenallee 2, 82335 Berg, Aufkirchen)

Isartal Alpacas (800m) Breeding of alpacas. When you leave the village on the forest road you come to the enclosure of the alpacas. If you are interested you can book a walk with alpacas (30€ per person) or do a course how to shear them. Just call the Darchinger family:

Island with pavilion (500m) Continue walking along Stephaniweg until you reach the dirt road towards the pond sewage treatment plant. Turn left before it and walk across the meadow to discover the beautiful, small lake with island and pavilion. The property is private, but if, as is usually the case, no one is there at the wake board facility, no one will bother you. Further over the main road (Wadlhauser Straße) you will find a biotope with a lake from the ice age.
(Stephaniweg, Wadlhauser Straße)

Moor with small black lake (1km / 2.8km) If you leave the village in an easterly direction, you will reach Irschenhauser Weg via Ickinger Straße. This leads you first down, along the highway and then through a tunnel. Follow the path and you will discover the small moor pond. Keep walking and after 2 km you will come through the forest to the beautiful village of Irschenhausen with the Hollerhaus and the good restaurant Rittergütl.
(Ickinger Straße, Irschenhauser Weg, Neufahrner Weg)

Tunnel with mural (800m) The oldest daughter (born 1992) of the owner family, Zarah Abraham, is an artist and has painted a beautiful wallpainting in the tunnel in her youth. You can reach this mural by walking down Irschenhauser Weg to the highway (see previous item) and entering the underpass.
(www.zarahabraham.com | IG @zarahabraham | Ickinger Straße, Irschenhauser Weg, Autobahn Tunnel)

Walk to the biotope (1.5 km) Follow Graf-Ruepp-Straße towards the western entrance of the village, either climb the hill. At sunset or sunrise, the view of the Alps and the light there is especially magical. Cross the main road to get down to the biotope with lake from the ice age. Sometimes horses graze behind it and swans swim in the water. Very idyllic.
(Graf-Ruepp-Straße, Wadlhauser Straße)

Walk to Farchach (3 km) Leave the village on the forest road and turn at the road traffic circle onto the field path "Radlerfeld". At the top of the hill there is a nice wooden bench to enjoy the beautiful view. If you continue walking you will come towards Breitenloh-Weg to the neighboring village of Farchach with its nice farm store café. (See recommendations for "Breakfast & Café").
(Graf-Ruepp-Straße in the direction of Wadlhauser Straße | Café: Kirchplatz 1, 82335 Berg)

Historical facts about the castle

In the years 1912-1914, Lieutenant Fritz Bullrich had a "manor house" built in Mörlbach according to plans by the architect Hans Kunz in the then fashionable Art Nouveau style; he owned large estates in and around Mörlbach, which he managed from here. His coat of arms still adorns the heavy, oak entrance door. Until the 1950s, the little castle, known as part of the "Mörlbach Estate", was owned by the family.

Immediately after the war it was confiscated for some time by US-Americans, later it went first to Mr. Schäfer, whose daughter Mrs. Grimm still lives in Mörlbach, and then, in 1967, for DM 500,000 into the possession of the SOS Children's Villages, here the mothers for the Children's Villages were trained.

During this time, there were many renovations, which took their toll on the old building fabric, especially the representative interior. Since 2000 - that is, for almost a quarter of a century - the former "manor house" has become the home of Gundel and Franz Abraham, their daughters, who are now grown up, and a colorful group of pets, who are closely guarded by "castle dog" Idefux, called Idi.

Much is still in its original state, the elegant 127 box windows, for example, for which we have had fir-green shutters originally reproduced, or the impressive marble cladding of the entrance area.

Our vision is to restore the original condition of the house, which is over 100 years old - but we also know that this is a life's work, which has become more and more a "way of life".

Historical facts about the st. stephan church & village history

Mörlbach is a district of the municipality of Berg am Starnberger See and has preserved its village idyll until our time. The former castle, a small rural manor house, stood south of the church and no longer exists. Today, "Schloss Mörlbach" is a manor house built in the years 1912-1914 - it has been the home of the Abraham family for almost a quarter of a century.

In his "Topographia Bavaria" of 1701 Michael Wening, court copper engraver to Elector Ferdinand Maria of Bavaria and his successor Elector Max Emanuel writes: "Merlbach, a Hofmark sambt Schloß Pachhausen im Obern Bayern liegt, Renntambt München, Bistum Freysing, Gericht Wolfertshausen, eine Stundt von da zimblich nieder und nahe bey einem großen Puechwald. (...) The church at Merlbach is dedicated in honor of St. Stephen. Otherwise, however, there is nothing in this village except for a mediocre agriculture."

The little church mentioned by Wening, little more than a chapel, dates from the late 15th century (early Gothic) and stands, now hidden behind tall trees, very picturesquely on the edge of a pond. The church (renovated in 1978/79) is known for its rich late Gothic furnishings: Inside it holds two valuable Gothic altars, which one would not expect to find in a simple village church: The high altar from the early 16th century was made by the famous "Master of Rabenden", the Annunciation altar from 1480 probably originates from a castle chapel and came to Mörlbach later. The founders of the church were probably the Thores of Eurasburg, who immortalized themselves in 1510 with their coat of arms in a choir window.

Every year and since time immemorial, on December 26, St. Stephen's Day, a procession takes place in Mörlbach, during which the horses are sprinkled with holy water and the "St. Stephen's salt" is consecrated, which is supposed to protect them from illness for a year.
